Which material is used on the wings of an aircraft?

Matt Tiry: Historically it was a 'doped' fabric skin (canvas), with wooden bracing held taught by wires.Then it moved onto wooden frames with aluminium skins (Super Marine Spitfire).Then steel and aluminium 'space frames' with aluminium skins.More modern aircraft have machined aluminium spars&ribs and aluminium skins (most commercial Jets).The very latest aircraft still use aluminium spars& ribs and are moving to composite glass fibre and plastic for the skins (e.g. Boeing Dreamliner)....Show more
