What is a reference bible?

Azalee Ahrendes: A reference bible is a bible that has footnotes and some have liner notes that explain things in the passages you are reading. Some may contain references to other places in the bible where a similar passage may be found. I had one that showed where in the Old Testament the prophecies are written when Jesus fulfilled them. Basically, a Reference bible is a bible with a study guide.

Jules Ashbach: A reference bible, a teaching bible, has notations , usually in the middle of the page , that refer you to other scriptures which say the same thing. For example, Isaiah 6:1-13 and Luke 8:1-15. If you read either of these in a reference bible, one would lead you to the other. In the NIV study bible, it is more defined. At the bottom of the page it will explain passages that may be confusing and at the same time give you other scriptures that say the same thing.A study bible, if you look up the reference numbers, will not only familiarize you with the mult! iple scriptures in accord, but will familiarize you with both the old and new testaments. This is a good thing.Usually a compact bible is one you can easily take along in your purse or vehicle and contains no concordance ( which gives you key words to locate certain scriptures) nor does it have cross references.Hope this helps.God's peace...Show more

Brock Hladik: Rich W is correct about what a "reference bible" is: a bible that contains cross references. Note that most bibles include cross references but are not described as "reference" bibles.Compact bibles are, as the name suggests, smaller in size than a "regular" (non-compact) edition. Compact bibles may have a reduced number of cross references or may eliminate cross references altogether for the sake of size.Cross references may or may not be part of the translation. For example, the original King James Version contained cross references supplied by the translators (normally not found or heavily abridged in m! odern editions), and the New Jerusalem Bible and New American ! Standard Bible likewise contain cross references as part of the complete translation. The Thompson Chain Reference bible mentioned by Rich W is probably the most *extensively* cross referenced edition of any translation, but I would *definitely* not call it the best (I strongly favor the New Jerusalem Bible Regular Edition cross references). It certainly *cannot* be purchased in any version, and several of the best versions available today are not available in a Thompson Chain Reference edition.Jim, http://www.bible-reviews.com/selector.html...Show more

Idell Mulliniks: Edited bull and slighly different edited bull?

Marcia Cheathan: A reference bible is one that gives you cross references in the Bible to verse that relate to what you are reading. Example: Suppose you want to do a search on a word like 'love'. In John 3:16 we read God loved the world...in verse 16 there would be a cross reference to another verse in Scripture dealing with love. like 1 John 4! :10, where it mentions love. The best cross reference bible is Thompson's . It can be purchase in any version you desire. A compact bible is one that has the Scriptures and just the scriptures with no references to any other verse....Show more
