Irving Jordahl: To be serious for a minute (I'm challenged at being serious) get Adobe Flash and/or Adobe After Effects. Right now in the US people are putting money into 3D animation -- period. Everyone else -- and I've seen foreign packages -- is charging an arm and a leg for animation packages. Even compared to Flash and After Effects which are NOT CHEAP. I'm serious about that.http://www.adobe.comNow, Linux. Linux is often used for professional animation. There is a good reason for this: it's called networking. A serious animation is usually too complex to fit on one machine. Linux does use memory efficiently, so you do have more available for your applications in Linux than in Windows, but the bottom line is that people who like it for animation are either fanbois or into networking. That said, except Pencil which you can get to run on Linux, most of the animation programs which are free are available on Linux. Two command-line programs whic! h will convert directories full of jpegs into silent mpegs are! convert from the Imagemagick Suite of programshttp://www.imagemagick.organd mencoder from the mplayer suite, which will also allow you to add a soundtrack to your mpeg, on a second pass, and convert it to wmv, flv, avi, or mp4...http://mplayerhq.huYou can look at all the FOSS programs except pencil (which I do recommend) by downloading the dyne:bolic live cdhttp://www.dynebolic.orgIt's actually a version of slackware which means it is somewhat harder than its documentation suggests, but it is still an easy way to try out most of the FOSS programs I mentioned above, and at least one I didn't mention because I dislike it so intensely....Show more
Azzie Trembly: If you can afford it, try adobe flash. For free, you can buy pivot. Pivot is a stick figure animator but the newer version allows you to add sprites to add real objects to the animation. Trust me, I used to use it.
